SOBER FOR SKI WEEK

Here’s a fun fact, that I knew was going to be true but got to experience for the first time yesterday. It is SO MUCH EASIER getting your children suited and booted for ski school without a hangover. Ha!

I have been looking forward to this trip for a while. Every ski week we come to a little town in Italy with one of my besties, whose husband is from here, and their family. We’ve got a big group this year. It’s beautiful, the food is great, and the children have a gaggle of friends to ski with. I love it.

The last time we were here was in 2020, right before the world shut down. It was my last boozy holiday, so a small part of me was apprehensive about what this week would look like. As I’ve said before, sober firsts can sometimes seem overwhelming. But as time goes on and your confidence grows they get easier and easier. Drinking didn’t cross my mind once yesterday even though I was surrounded by it.

Here are some of the great things about being sober during ski week-

Breathing in the fresh mountain air takes on a whole new meaning. It feels so darn good.

When you’re not numbing out your taste buds with alcohol, you really get to appreciate the food. Pasta and cheese calories don’t count in Italy, ever.

Being present for family holiday moments has always been one of my favourite parts of sobriety, and I am loving the mountain version.

The Crodino- Italys most popular non-alcoholic aperitif, which has been around since the 1960s, is delicious.Getting a good night’s sleep while on holiday is life-changing.

And again, the pre-ski school meltdowns -a.ka. “my boots are too tight”, “I don’t like this helmet”, “I can’t see in these goggles” and of course after they are all dressed and in the lift- “I have to pee!” are so much easier without a hangover. Usually after one of these mornings, while trying not to be sick, I was questioning why in the world I booked this holiday to begin with. But now it’s just something to be patient and muddle through knowing there is a really good cup of Italian coffee at the other end, followed by a long day of memories I get to be present for.

Would you love to experience a sober holiday with your family but have no idea where to start? I totally get it.
