IT’S NOT ABOUT HOW MUCH YOU ARE DRINKING. IT’S ABOUT HOW YOU WANT TO FEEL.

What’s your goal when it comes to drinking?

Does it go something like this-

“I want to drink less.”

“My goal is to just drink on weekends.”

“I don’t want to drink alone at home anymore.”

“My goal is to quit.”

Take a minute to think about that goal.

Close your eyes. Repeat the goal to yourself. Ask yourself- how does it feel to have that goal?  My goal with drinking was always to cut back. But the idea of trying to cut back seemed totally scary and not achievable because I had tried it before and failed.

I also had some hardcore beliefs about alcohol that I needed to get curious about. For example, I used to believe there was no way I could ever have fun on a girls night out without drinks. There was zero chance I was even willing to give it a try.

But then I reframed my goal. It wasn’t about how much I was drinking. It wasn’t about my behaviour, I couldn’t seem to control that with how I had been trying. I changed my goal based on how I wanted to feel.  I knew that alcohol was making me grumpy and tired and I didn’t want to feel like that anymore. So, in the beginning of my sobriety journey, I woke up and my goal each new day was to feel better, to feel the best that I possibly could.

I didn’t think about whether or not I was going to drink or not, it just wasn’t even a consideration because I knew if I had a drink, I would feel yucky all over again.  The goal of feeling better, and being the best version of myself was exciting, empowering and put me in the driver’s seat of my life. It felt the total opposite of trying to stick to a certain number of drinks.  I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. It doesn’t matter how much you’re drinking.

The point is- do you want to feel better?  If the answer to that question is yes, then what is holding you back? Are you scared of what your friends may think? That you’ll totally lose your social life? I get it, I’ve been there. I was scared too. You may just find out, like I did, that all of the things you are worried about are actually not a big deal!

You will never know unless you try.
